How to Unclog Your Sink the Eco-Friendly Way

A clogged or slow draining sink can not only be an annoyance but a sign of a deeper plumbing problem. Rather than relying on a costly plumber, most people tend to purchase chemical solutions that only work temporarily. However, these harsh chemicals can be corrosive and may even cause dangerous allergic reactions or respiratory complications. Following Nashville’s advancement toward eco-friendly solutions, our company Tub Tile & Tops encourages natural products and techniques. Unclogging Your Sink with Natural Products

Severe chemicals such as Drano are made of harsh components like lye. When these heavily toxic solutions get in contact with the skin, they can cause life-threatening effects, especially when exposed to the eyes or ingested. For this reason, many people consider more natural ingredients to avoid harming their pets or children. For a more organic alternative to a clogged sink, start by collecting these materials:

  • Lemon
  • Baking soda
  • Rags
  • Boiling water
  • Vinegar

1. Portion Your Materials

Vinegar is a strong natural cleaner and can be used for several purposes around the house. Generally, 1 cup of white vinegar is more than enough. For standard sinks, about a 1/4 cup of baking soda and a large pot of boiling water should do the trick.

2. Add the Baking Soda

By shoveling the entire portion of baking soda into the drain, you are preparing for the chemical reaction. Due to the powder’s flexibility, the baking soda can fit into the smaller cracks of the pipes and dissolve the sludge that may be causing the clog.

3. Initiate the Chemical Reaction

We all know what happens when you add vinegar to baking soda, but did you know this chemical reaction can break apart debris and dissolve the hairballs that slow the water?

4. Cover the Drain

It’s a smart idea to plug your drain with a rag or sink stopper so that the chemical reaction can stay focused on the clog rather than overflowing into the sink. After your sink is plugged up, simply wait 15 minutes for the solution to do its job.

5. Add Boiling Water

If your sink has a foul odor, squeeze a lemon into the drain as the fruit has disinfecting properties. Then filling your pipes with boiling water will wash down the excess baking soda and remnants of the blockage.
